The Hawaii Amateur Skimboarding League or HASL has been created to bring together the recent popularity of skimboarding here in Hawaii. In fact, the popularity of skimboarding throughout the world is seeing tremendous growth and can one day be an industry just as big as skateboarding or surfing is today. With so many people skimming, who are young or old, male or female, here in Hawaii there is an opportunity for an organization to represent Hawaiian skimmers.
The goal for HASL is most importantly to bring skimmers from all islands and abroad to come and enjoy the awesome skim spots Hawaii has to offer. Since the skill level of skimming has reached so high, the next focus is friendly competition. So, the contest format will be a season of contests to be held at the different amazing skim spots throughout the islands. Points will be added up through the season and at the end of year a championship will be awarded to the top 3 skimmers in each division.
The results that contestants should be proud of is that now skimmers who live in Hawaii will have some credit that can help a talented skimboarder make a living from this sport one day. The contest and championship results from HASL can be used as references to enter larger contests on the mainland and even internationally that are growing quickly each year.
The Hawaii Amateur Skimboarding league is looking forward to growing into a fun and prosperous organization. The structure hopes to grow into a 3 day event for each contest. A format where Friday would be check-in and practice so that we can have a good time skimming with visitors who can catch good waves without the pressure of the contest. Saturday would be beginners, intermediate, and advanced divisions. And Sunday would be shop sponsored and factory sponsored divisions.
This means Hawaii skimmers would have to promote themselves to the local surf shops to create a skim team where your shop sponsor will pay your entry fee and in return you are promoting the shop in front of a huge crowd of skimmers. An even more skilled skimboarder would be motivated to get sponsored by one of the factory board makers. For example, become a team rider for Victoria, Exile, Slotstick, or Zap skimboards. Again this sponsor would pay your entry fees and in return you would be helping your board sponsor by promoting their products with your talent in front of a lot of skimmers.
While this league is just beginning everything we learn will be as we go along. If you have any comments, concerns ideas or would like to volunteer please send a message to

Registration for the 1st inaugural contest at Sandy Beach is now open. The details of day, time, price and judging criteria are included on the website. Any contestant wanting to enter will be required to pay a yearly membership fee for this first contest but will be good for the 2009 contest season which at the moment looks to be a total of 6 contests. The contest entry and membership fee will go towards paying for the insurance, permits, t-shirts and everything else that it takes to run each event. So, if you are interested in entering please do and you will be helping to promote your sport.
